A search operation is taking place at Lough Corrib in Co Mayo after a man in his 80s failed to return home from a fishing trip yesterday.

The man in his early 80s man set out from Golden Bay pier (between Corr na Móna and Cong), on a small craft to fish on the Corrib.

His wife reported him missing when he did not return home.

His craft is described as a small grey boat with a red 'upper streak'. He is understood to be from the Claremorris area of Mayo.

Rescue boats have been on the water since 2am and have been joined by local fishermen and boaters from the Maigh Cuilinn area on the south side of the lake.

Several coastguard units, including helicopters Rescue 115 and Rescue 118, have been deployed to the scene.

The search operation remains ongoing, the Coast Guard said.
