In a disturbing development, Colonel Sofia Qureshi, a prominent Muslim officer and spokesperson of the Indian Armed Forces, has reportedly become the target of a violent attack at her residence in Gokak, Belagavi district. According to social media reports, Hindu extremists allegedly linked with RSS vandalized her home and assaulted her family members.

The attack comes in the wake of controversial and inflammatory remarks made by Madhya Pradesh minister and senior BJP leader Vijay Shah. Shah had publicly referred to Colonel Sofia Qureshi as a “sister of terrorists,” a comment that drew immediate backlash from the opposition and civil society.

Colonel Qureshi has been at the forefront of public communication for the Indian Armed Forces duringOperation Sindoor, providing regular updates alongside Wing Commander Vyomika Singh and Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri. The operation, which is directed against Pakistan, has been a matter of national significance.

The minister’s derogatory statement has ignited political and public outrage. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge condemned Shah’s remarks, demanding his immediate removal from the Madhya Pradesh cabinet. “Such language from a government minister against a serving officer of the armed forces is unacceptable and dangerous,” Kharge said in a press statement.

Other opposition leaders have echoed similar sentiments, calling for accountability and urging Prime Minister Narendra Modi to take a firm stand on the issue.

The alleged attack on Colonel Qureshi’s family has raised serious concerns about the safety of military personnel, particularly those from minority communities. Reports claim that the assailants not only ransacked the house but also physically assaulted her family members, leaving them traumatized.

Though official police confirmation is awaited, videos and images circulating on social media depict damage to the property and have intensified calls for justice.

Colonel Sofia Qureshi has served the nation with honor and continues to represent the Indian Armed Forces in a critical communication role. Her being targeted, allegedly due to her faith, has sparked debate over rising intolerance and extremist actions that undermine national unity and discipline within the armed forces.

As public outcry grows, several human rights groups and former military officials have urged the central and state governments to ensure Colonel Qureshi’s safety and take strict action against those responsible for the attack. They also demanded legal proceedings against Minister Vijay Shah for his communal and defamatory remarks.

The Ministry of Defence has yet to issue an official statement on the matter, but pressure is mounting for a thorough investigation and swift justice.
